PERSONAL ART/EXHIBITIONS
ARTIST STATEMENT
The subject content of my work is generated from my own
life experiences and from research material such as
questionnaires.
Much of my concern is with domestic interior spaces, and
with the confusion which surrounds our memories of
inhabiting them. When I draw, make small scale models or
take pinhole photographs the images take on a distortion
which can blur the distinction between reality and
fantasy.
There is a strong element of looking inside, and the
emptiness of the spaces leave room for the viewers own
life experiences.
At present my artwork explores our memories of special
places or “refuges” that we had as children.
MY WAY OF WORKING
I have developed a way of working which is driven by a
passion to search out and piece together fragments of
information which record the passage of human life
through time.
People leave behind them artefacts that bear traces of
their existence, such as letters, fabrics, personal
effects, films and photographs.
There is a haphazard and fragile nature to these
surviving elements which in themselves do not form a
narrative, but raise questions in the mind of the viewer
about what has been lost in time and space.
My artwork and installations encourage the viewer to
interact and relate the artwork to his life experiences
in order to attempt to form a narrative.
I am fascinated by an almost forensic quest to piece
together a narrative from these remnants.
I look back at a crumbling school exercise book which
triggers searching thoughts about a distant period of
time of which I have little recollection. It is this
searching in the empty spaces of my mind that drives me
rather than instant recall.
My work has developed to explore shared life experiences
and has been extended by actively seeking resource
materials through questionnaires about aspects of their
childhood (please see example attached )
Using these materials, I am driven to make artwork which
includes photographs, sound recordings, models, light
boxes, projections and animations.
I work in the field of multi media Contemporary Art
usually presented as installation . I select the subject
matter, the medium and the presentation of my work in
order to present the viewer with an experience where he
will become involved and use his own life experiences to
interpret the work .
Much of my work is made using accessible and low
technology skills such as Drawing, Pinhole Photography
and model making. In addition, digital technology is
used to record sound and visual images to add a further
dimension.
